Tomb of the Unknown Music

I was introduced to music in strange ways, for instance, MIDI files "borrowed" from all over the Internet and put into freeware games. With no attribution, and often no metadata, I have no idea what these songs are or who wrote them!

For a lot of these, I have spent years laboring trying to find them, doing all kinds of things - downloading 100,000+ file collections and searching for file size and duration matches, audio spectrum analysis, anything I can think of... and I've still come up blank for some reason or another.

As I try to better categorize and label the media I have, I would love for you to lend your ear and see if you know what these are... or maybe you won't know either and now you'll be as equally tormented as I am.

Mysterious MIDIs

From games and collections across the Internet. Some are probably arrangements, some are probably original!

1.mid 2000 or earlier
bg fastbeat.mid 2005 or earlier Definitively found in the Sonic fan game "Neo-Sonic Godspeed 2", but I have a vague recollection of having heard this MIDI somewhere else, far before the 2005-2006 timeframe for that game.
boss1.mid ? Has a distinctive "Seq-1" marker at the beginning of the file, likely created by a specific (unknown) sequencer program that appears to mostly be used by Japanese composers. Almost certainly from the same source as "end1.mid" and "fanfa.mid".
cnc7BC0.mid 2003 or earlier Extracted from a game/application made in "Click & Create", although I no longer remember which one. Track names have what appears to be a potential author name (DJ_YOS).

without_sound.mid
2011 or earlier I believe I downloaded this directly from the author, but of course I never took note of who that was. Same author as "no_flowers_please.mid".
darklite.mid 1999 or earlier Found in the Sonic fan game "The Search for Knuckles".
dreamw1.mid 1998 or earlier Alternatively "dreamworld.mid". Based on the sound, it seems likely to be a late 90s dance song, but the potential name "Dreamworld" is generic enough that I couldn't locate it.
end1.mid ? Has a distinctive "Seq-1" marker at the beginning of the file, likely created by a specific (unknown) sequencer program that appears to mostly be used by Japanese composers. Almost certainly from the same source as "boss1.mid" and "fanfa.mid".
EVIL1.mid 2003 or earlier Found in MIDIs "borrowed" for an RPG creation tool called "Scenario RPG Maker".
fanfa.mid ? Has a distinctive "Seq-1" marker at the beginning of the file, likely created by a specific (unknown) sequencer program that appears to mostly be used by Japanese composers. Almost certainly from the same source as "boss1.mid" and "end1.mid".
ggz.mid 2003 or earlier Found in the Sonic fan game "Sonic XG" (demo 3).
no_flowers_
please.mid
2011 or earlier I believe I downloaded this directly from the author, but of course I never took note of who that was. Same author as "communication_without_sound.mid".
tknojam3.mid 2001 or earlier Found in the Sonic fan game "Neo-Sonic 3: Armageddon".
WOA!.mid 2000 or earlier
zcdidung.mid 2002 or earlier This MIDI is actually "identified" in terms of it even being on vgmusic.com as "Dungeon" from "Zelda" on the CD-i. Here's the thing, though... it doesn't seem to actually be any of the Zelda CD-i games (not that I actually played them... ugh). It may just be a remix that has taken extreme creative liberties, but to my ears it is unrecognizable.
....................mid 2001 or earlier Wow, really helpful filename. Found in the Mario fan game "Yoshi vs. Windows".
Recorded Rarities

WAVs, MP3s, and everything in between. We can probably blame the early days of audio sharing for some of these, when tags were just a suggestion.

s_opll6.mp3 2001 or earlier? This is a mystery that predates my discovery of it - others are searching too - but I know I've heard it somewhere before! This was allegedly found on an unknown Japanese website in the early 2000s. I agree with the filename that this is something written for the Yamaha YM2413 (OPLL) chip meaning it may originate in the MSX computer scene.
An alternative filename is sonic1.mp3, but that's misleading as it is not from any Sonic game.
s_opll7[1].mp3 2001 or earlier? Closely related to the above s_opll6.mp3, but a bit more confusing as this is NOT an OPLL chiptune. It has sampled drums which an OPLL cannot do. My best guess is it could still be MSX related, but for the MSX-AUDIO expansion using the Y8950 chip which is an OPL derivative with sample support. It could also be for, perhaps, the PC-9801-86 sound board which also matches the combination of FM, PSG, and samples heard here.
Sonic Frenzy Adventure

Why does this have its own section? SFA is a Sonic fan game that was in development during the early 2000s, but discontinued around 2008-2009 due to data loss. It was picked back up and completed in 2020. I followed SFA back when it was originally being worked on, and then somehow actually ended up assisting with some bugfix work for a patch in 2021, so I'm a bit attached to this game.

Anyway, some of the music that was used in the game is unidentified, and the game's author, Blue Frenzy, actually forgot over time what they were and only had the renamed, clipped, compressed files edited for the game itself. We've managed to identify several of them, but there are still a few left that have evaded capture. What complicates things is that SFA takes music from considerably more eclectic sources than the usual Sonic fan game - including anime OSTs and even adult visual novels!

If we find them all, perhaps the game can be updated with a remastered, higher quality version of the soundtrack!

HPZa2.ogg 2008 or earlier The drum fill at the beginning is not part of the original track and was edited in.

Zone 12-Egg Hideout Zone act 3.mid 1996-2005 Identified! "Girl's Room" from Viper-M1
Track names call out that this MIDI was made for the Roland SC-88 Pro. I suspect this may be from a visual novel using MIDI music, but after trawling a few hundred soundtracks I haven't found it yet.
